Apple Watch software gets major update that puts widgets centre stage

Apple's next major software update for the Apple Watch will introduce a new interface. Widgets will take a central role in the update instead of apps. Read more about what this update will entail here.

Information from Bloomberg
The news comes from the always well-informed Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. Previously, the Apple Watch always had a special interface for widgets called "Glances". These are small blocks of information from specific apps. Glances were removed in later updates, but now Apple is returning to this with a new interface where such widgets will take centre stage again. To do this, Apple is going to introduce a new type of widget for the Apple Watch. In terms of design, this is somewhere between the old Glances and the widgets you can now also use on your iPhone. In addition, the new interface should also resemble the current Siri dial located on the Apple Watch.

Possibilities with widgets
Between all these widgets, or information cubes, you can navigate to open your current sports activity, for example. Or, for example, to view the weather or your calendar without having to launch the full app. Apple is also said to be working on another feature where you would be able to customise and change how your Apple Watch buttons work, that way you could, for example, quickly pull up a widget. The new Apple Watch Ultra already introduced an extra button that was programmable on the side. So it seems Apple wants to move more in that direction and give users more freedom.

Hardware update
Besides the major software update, rumours are also circulating that a hardware Apple Watch update is coming. A redesign is said to be coming that should make the Apple Watch feel new. Whether the redesign will be mainly hardware or software is not known. The iPhone will also get a new update later this year with iOS 17, which will also bring minor improvements. For instance, it is also going to be possible to install apps outside the App Store in the European Union. In any case, we are very much looking forward to all these new updates from Apple!
